Ouro Preto was founded way back in 1698 and soon after became the nexus of the greatest gold and silver rush in all the Americas. It wasn't until 1711 however that Ouro Preto was officially recognized as a city. It was then that Ouro Preto took the name Vila Rica. In the 1720's it became the capital of Minas Gerais, a region that retains its status as one of the principal mineral extracting areas in all of Brazil. As the 1700's came to a close, a close-knit clan of insiders and professionals met in Ouro Preto to seek Brazilian independence from the motherland of Portugal. It was here that a revolution took hold in the hearts and minds of men yearning to be free.
The revolution didn't go as it had been intended, but Ouro Preto retained its importance through 1823 when Brazil finally did achieve its independence. Life in Ouro Preto Minas Gerais has remained eventful and interesting. Today, Ouro Preto is a favorite of tourists worldwide. It was declared a national monument in 1933 so that the nation's most elaborate and prestigious buildings, churches, and houses could be protected and restored. Treasured amenities of the city include ornate Baroque churches, religiously influenced architecture and sculpture. Much of this fine artistry came to being under the skillful watch of one Antonio Francisco Lisboa, better known as Aleijadinho to the Ouro Preto natives. Ouro Preto also played host to the signing of the groundbreaking economic treaty linking Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Brazil!
